Thanks to the donations of CK parishioners past and present, Christ the King School now boasts a new science lab!  The lab is located in the former maintenance shop and bus garage in the Parish Hall building, and is used every day for school classes.

"Wow! I'm very impressed with the renovation," exclaimed Karen Malcolm, school principal.  "It looks fabulous and will be just what we need to support the State of Ohio standards that require hands-on, inquiry-based lessons and experiences."

The lab is very roomy compared to the standard classrooms.  It features tables and chairs for students to work in groups with power and ethernet cabling to all of the workstations.  Countertops and cupboards surround the room with several sinks for student use.  The teacher's desk features ample space for demonstrations, a sink, and SMART board.  The former third bay of the bus garage has been filled with shelving for storage of science supplies and students' work-in-progress.

Funding for the majority of the renovation costs came from the One Faith... Many Blessings campaign.  Funds were earmarked for the planned replacement of our school buses, but the service was dropped two years ago as needs of the school changed.  The School Advisory Council studied the issue of where best to use that money to benefit the students and recommended the use to Finance Council.  An endowment grant paid another large portion of the cost and an anonymous donor filled the remaining gap.  Parents' Club has funded the equipment, furnishings, and items needed beyond the renovation.  Thank you to all those who have supported these efforts and campaigns!

Open House was hosted in the science lab on January 22 and 23 following all of the weekend Masses.  Crowds of parents, children, and parishioners alike stopped by to check out the room and enjoy refreshments provided by the school.

The lab will be open for tours, along with the rest of the school, at their annual Open House on Sunday, March 6, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Church asks us to surrender ourselves to prayer and to the reading of Scripture, to fasting and to giving alms. The fasting that all do together on Fridays is but a sign of the daily Lenten discipline of individuals and households: fasting for certain periods of time, fasting from certain foods, but also fasting from other things and activities. Likewise, the giving of alms is some effort to share this world equally-not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents.
