St. Francis of Assisi had a deep love for all creation. One day he spoke to the birds telling them that they were noble creatures of God and that they should praise and love the God who brought them into existence.
He wished each and every creature to experience the joy of its Creator and express this joy in its own unique way. Far from being some quaint, primitive lunatic, Francis was a mystic who recognized God in His creation. He has been named the Patron Saint of the Environmental Movement.
Every year around his feastday of October 4th, people around the world host services in which animals are blessed. We are invited to catch a glimpse of God through the beauty and simplicity of his created world, especially in the animals who are our daily companions.
