Christ the King's four inch water main broke under the street early Sunday morning, January 3, 2010. Frigid temperatures and running water turned Harvest Lane into an ice rink causing the entire block of Harvest Lane to be closed for most of the day.
Although the break was under the street, the water main is under the west side of Harvest Lane. That means the parish owns the pipe and is responsible for the repairs of the pipe and pavement. The total cost is estimated to be as much as $10,000. City crews made the repairs, but will bill Christ the King for the actual cost.

Masses were said as normal. No water was available in the School, Church, Parish Hall, or Activities Building. The Parish Center (former rectory) has its own water line so still had water available. Mass-goers were directed to the Parish Center for restrooms. Bottled water was used to purify vessels and drinking needs.
The Epiphany Dinner was served to 130 guests in carry-out containers. Water from the Parish Center was used for cooking and serving. Water service was restored in time for clean-up, although special sanitization procedures were followed.
Christ the King School was open on Monday as normal. Since the school is under a boil advisory, parents were asked to send bottled water for drinking purposes. Hand sanitizer was used in addition to normal hand-washing procedures.
Brian Smith, Facilities Manager, said this is the third water main break during his time at Christ the King. The most recent was in the early 1990's. |
