Asking God for Help 8-31-2008 |
One day a small boy was trying to lift a heavy stone, but he couldn’t budge it. His father stopped to watch his efforts. Finally he said to his son: “Are you using all your strength?”
“Yes, I am,” the boy cried, exasperated.
“No,” the father said calmly, “You’re not. You haven’t asked me to help you.”
How often we give up when the job seems beyond our limited capabilities! And yet we cannot estimate our ability properly, unless we include the resources at our disposal- including the help of God.
How many parents have asked God for help in raising children? Who hasn’t prayed before an interview? What wife hasn’t prayed for patience in dealing with her husband? Or vice versa? The list could go on and on of the countless ways we storm heaven for divine assistance throughout our lives. But all too often, we fall into the trap of being like the boy who wants do it all by himself. When we are attempting a task – big or small - we would do well to remember to stop and pray in all humility for God’s help. This is a wonderful reminder of not only our dependence upon God, but of our need and assurance of God’s grace in our lives. When we let Him work in our lives, He’ll carry us through some of the most difficult situations we could never master alone.
Love, Fr. Bill
Beginning the weekend of September 6th & 7th, there will be a slight change to confession schedule. Confessions will be heard on Saturdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and then from 6:25 to 6:45 p.m. If you need the Sacrament of Reconciliation, then it needs to be done before receiving the Eucharist.
