Finding God in our Midst 11-09-2008 |
While reading an article about veterans, I came across a wonderful reflection by Fr. William Blazek, SJ, MD. Fr. Blazek served in the Army’s 101st Airborne Division during Operation Desert Storm & Desert Shield.
He states, “One thing that has always struck this veteran about those who serve in the Armed Forces is the incredible generosity with which they care for each other, the incredible generosity with which they love one another. They do this in sharing meals, in giving burned-out comrades time to catch a bit of sleep, and in simple things like cups of coffee. Although I could not see it as clearly then, God was very present to us in such simple gestures during the First Gulf War. Now that I am a bit more practiced in looking for signs of Him, it is not too hard to figure out. To take care of someone is to love that person, and God is love. Therefore, we can find God’s love in our service members’ care for each other.”
“For any service member in harm’s way having a particularly rough time of it at present, I cautiously offer the following for your consideration. It is a suggestion my brother made during one of the hardest times in my life: ‘When things get bad, find one good thing in your day, no matter how small, and hold on to that.’”
I believe Fr. Blazek’s ability to find God in the midst of war and his brother’s advice applies to each of us. We may feel as if we’re waging wars of our own – with our children, careers, worrying about aging parents or even with ourselves. Each of us would do well to look around and realize that today someone may have smiled at you, or said “hello” or given their life for yours. We must take time each day to realize that no matter how difficult the battle we may find ourselves in, God is closer than each of us could possibly fathom. Never forget to say “thank you” – expressions of gratitude, even for a cup of coffee or the simplest gesture of holding a door open, are at their very best expressions that someone does care and may in fact be the example of God’s love we need to get us through our day.
Regardless of our age, each of us has a great deal to be grateful for today. Don’t forget to say “thank you” to the men and women who serve and have served in our Armed Forces. I know I’m grateful for all that they’ve done, and are doing to protect our country.
Have a great week!
Love, Fr. Bill
